2010 Workshops

Richard Renaldi: Introduction to the Photo Book
Saturday, September 25, 2010, 9 am – 3:30 pm
Boston University, College of Arts & Sciences 326
725 Commonwealth Avenue
Class size: 18
Members: $60/Non-members: $80

This one-day class will explore the current landscape of the photography book publishing market, and will focus on the process of editing, sequencing and preparing a body of work for publication. Photographer and publisher Richard Renaldi will explain the steps involved in shepherding a project from the portfolio state through to a published book. During the course we will address the questions of what makes a good book, why publish a book, and what considerations go into publishers' decisions about marketability, sales and distribution. Richard will relate his experiences working with Aperture on his first book Figure and Ground, as well as starting his own publishing company Charles Lane Press in 2008. Students should come prepared to share at least one portfolio of 20-30 images that they hope someday to have published. (Please note: This is not a course on book construction or book binding techniques.)
