Come celebrate the Vernal Equinox with us! This Night is open to photographers who push the boundaries of the medium, using alternative or new processes and techniques, integrating photography with other arts or new technologies, in celebration of Unconventional Inventions, PRC’s satellite exhibit at Endicott College. All artists and photo enthusiasts interested in unusual work are welcome to attend. Six presenter slots available. Francine Weiss received her BA from Wellesley College in English and studio art and her PhD in American studies from Boston University. A specialist in the history of photography and American visual culture, Francine wrote her dissertation on Edward Weston’s photographs for Leaves of Grass. Prior to joining the PRC, Francine worked as the Acting Assistant Curator in the Department of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art, where she researched nineteenth century American and French photographers for upcoming exhibitions. Her past museum experiences include three years as a researcher and curatorial fellow at the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University and two years as a graduate intern and curatorial fellow at the deCorodva Museum and Sculpture Park. At deCordova, she curated DeCordova Collects: Gifts from Stephen and Sybil Stone, and co-curated Self-Evidence: Identity in Contemporary Art and the 2003 deCordova Annual. Francine also teaches art history at Wellesley College. View the Flickr set of photographs >> Nudes Night Open to all photographers, artists, and enthusiasts interested in the nude body as subject. Six presenter slots available. Karin Rosenthal has photographed the nude in nature since 1975 and, for sixteen years, has led students at all skill levels to discover these combined genres in original and personal ways. Rosenthal’s nudes have been published and exhibited internationally and are represented in sixteen museum collections, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the International Center for Photography; the Fogg, Rose, and Danforth Museums; the Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Barbara; and the Brooklyn Museum. Her photograph in the exhibition First Doubt: Optical Confusion in Modern Photography at the Yale University Art Gallery was selected to represent the show of 100 images by 20th Century photographers and was featured in The New York Times review. She has received several awards including Grand Prize in the Renaissance International Photography Competition, First Prize for Nudes in the Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, and the Ultimate Eye Foundation Grant for Figurative Photography. A book, Karin Rosenthal: Twenty Years of Photographs, was produced for a retrospective of her black-and-white nudes at the Danforth Museum in 2000. The PRC recently co-sponsored a year-long exhibition of her work with MIT’s Center for Theoretical Physics. In addition to workshops, Rosenthal teaches classes in her Watertown studio. She is a Resident Scholar at Brandeis’ Women’s Studies Research Center. View the Flickr set of photographs >> Assignment/Pin-Up Night Please join us for an informal, mix-and-mingle style Night at the PRC featuring a gallery pin-up of small prints created as a result of the themed "assignment" issued below. If you wish to participate in the gallery pin-up party by showing your prints, you must register ahead of time by emailing info@prcboston.org. Each assignment participant is asked to bring a maximum of 5 prints no larger than 11 x 14 inches to pin up on the gallery walls for the Night. The prints do NOT need to be high quality exhibition or portfolio prints. Curious onlookers and photo enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. Please bring refreshments to share and an open mind! Urban Landscape Night Wednesday, June 26, 2013, 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Guest Host: Phillip Jones Open to all photographers and photo enthusiasts interested in cityscapes, urban environments, and/or metropolis as subject matter. Six presenter slots available. Recently featured in the PRC’s NEPR Showcase and most well-known for his incredible black and white images of urban environments, Phillip Jones studied with Gene Davis, the Washington Color School artist, in high school. He then studied at the Corcoran School of Art, Antioch College, and Cooper Union, and exhibited his paintings. In 1970s New York City, he worked in television, set design, and medical illustration while continuing to exhibit his work. By the late 1980s, after moving to Charlottesville, VA, Jones split his time between painting, illustration, and photography. After moving to Boston in 1990, Jones began to exhibit his photographic work. Since then, he’s exhibited at the deCordova Museum, the Fuller Museum, the Lafayette Museum, the Hunter Museum, the Boston Athenaeum, the Boston Public Library, the Boston Center for the Arts, the Federal Reserve Gallery, the Cesium Gallery, and Chatham Gallery, with fourteen solo exhibits at his primary venue, the Mercury Gallery. His work is included in numerous collections including the deCordova Museum, the Boston Athenaeum, the Boston Public Library, Pfizer, Fidelity Investments, Putnam Investments, Accenture, Banana Republic, Levi Strauss, Raytheon, Goldman Sachs, and The Four Seasons. He currently splits his time between Boston and Atlanta. View the Flickr set of photographs >> Portrait & Identity Night Open to all photographers and photo enthusiasts interested in portraiture and the study of identity through visual imagery, in celebration of Framed: Identity and the Photographic Portrait in the PRC’s gallery this fall. Lydia Panas is an award- winning photographer whose work has been exhibited widely throughout the United States and internationally. Her work was recently on view in the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize Exhibition 2012 at the National Gallery in London. She was one of nine artists selected by Houston FotoFest curators for the prestigious International Discoveries Exhibition in 2007, and she has won First Prize for the Publisher’s Choice Singular Image at CENTER, Santa Fe, NM. Her work is included in numerous collections, including Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, TX; Brooklyn Museum, NY; and Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago, IL. Lydia has degrees from Boston College, the School of Visual Arts, and New York University/International Center of Photography. She has also received a Whitney Museum Independent Study Fellowship. Her first monograph was released in the United States in March 2012 and was named one of PDN’s Books of 2012 as well as a Top Ten Coffee Table Book by the Daily Beast. Surreal Night Tuesday, October 22, 2013, 6:00 – 8:00pm Guest Host & Lead Presenter: Stephen Sheffield Open to all photographers producing work with a disorienting, hallucinatory, or dream-like qualities, unreal imagery, or inspired by Jerry Uelsmann and/or Man Ray. Come join us for a truly mind-bending Night! Five presenter slots available.
Stephen Sheffield, a native of the Boston area, is an alumnus of Cornell University in Ithaca, NY where he obtained a BFA in Painting/Mixed Media. He received his MFA in photography and mixed media from California College of the Arts in Oakland, CA, studying with Larry Sultan, Jean Finley and others. His work varies between a unique style of straight photography, as well as alternative processes, mural printing and large-scale photomontage. Stephen's combined use of these processes brings to his work a surreal painterly feeling not usually associated with photography. Positioning himself as a muse, Sheffield photographs a lone figure in haunting, seemingly abandoned settings. Influenced by film noir, crime novels, and the projected memory of past eras, Sheffield constructs moments of mystery and ambiguity. The images depict Sheffield’s displaced figure dressed in a suit standing, crouching, turning, walking, and leaning. Often the figure is blurred from movement, heightening the sense of surrounding stillness. Sheffield has exhibited nationally for many years and has a number of large-scale commissions in Boston and New York City, and his work has been featured in many national publications. He runs the fine art black and white photography department at the New England School of Photography in Boston, and is represented in the Boston area by Panopticon Gallery.
Food Night Come celebrate the edible decadence of the holidays with us at the PRC. Open to all commercial, editorial, and fine art photographers dealing with, what else, FOOD! Five presenter slots available. Culinary concoctions encouraged – bring a snack to share.
Michael Piazza is a freelance photographer based in Boston, originally from San Francisco. He studied Art History and Film before settling into still photography and moving to New York City. After traveling the globe with Albert Watson, Mary Ellen Mark, and food photographer Andrea Fazzari, Michael moved to Boston with his wife in 2007. Somewhere along the line he merged his love of cooking and food with his love of making pictures. He is currently Chief Photographer and Creative Director of Edible Boston Magazine and blogs about cooking and gardening at Sadie’s Table. He also contributes to Boston Magazine, Yankee Magazine, Martha Stewart Living, and Food&Wine. He has worked on several cookbooks: Simple Italian Sandwiches, Simple Italian Snacks, and A Ligurian Kitchen.
