This exhibition is part of the larger Global Health Project, which also includes a panel discussion and a publication. The exhibit focuses on three of the greatest health challenges the world community faces today: HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and access to clean water. Through arresting images, photographers Kristen Ashburn, Dominic Chavez, and David Rochkind document the heavy toll that global health issues take on the developing world. Their poignant photographs invite us beyond the grim, faceless statistics and bring us in close contact with people—mothers, fathers, children—confronted by enormous hardship.

The Global Health Project aims to educate our New England community about these critical global health issues, utilizing documentary photography to offer direct insight into the individuals and communities affected. The photographs, combined with text about the broader issues and the specific situations documented, will lead to a greater understanding of the challenges and possible solutions to global health problems, particularly the work undertaken by Boston-based institutions.
The overarching goal of the Global Health Project is to educate the general public, and the arts and medical communities, about the ongoing universal concerns communicated in the exhibition and publication. By organizing and presenting this project, the PRC serves as a resource not only for photographers but for professionals in the healthcare, human rights, and public policy fields, as well as demonstrating the power of the photographic image.
