RWR #1 from the series Sunday Tuesday Thursday, 2007-10/2013
Michal Ronnen Safdie has been photographing a wide variety of subject matter, ranging from trees and the natural world to humans and socio-political events, for decades. Born in Jerusalem, Israel in 1951, Safdie studied sociology and anthropology at the Hebrew University and Brandeis University. In 1995, she began her series Western Wall, documenting life at the Jewish holy site in Jerusalem. For Rwanda: After and Darfur: Now, she photographed refugees from Darfur. Safdie’s current body of work, Sunday Tuesday Thursday, documents Orthodox women and children at a beach in Israel that is open exclusively to men except on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. Safdie’s work has been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions across the world, including at the Skirball Museum (Los Angeles, CA), United States Holocaust Museum (Washington DC), Salander O’Reilly Galleries and Andrea Meislin Gallery (both New York City), Robert Klein Gallery and Institute of Contemporary Art (both Boston, MA), George Eastman House (Rochester, NY), Jardin du Trocadero (Paris, France), and Jewish Museum (Berlin, Germany). Her work is also held in many institutional collections, and her photos continue to be displayed worldwide by Israel’s Foreign Ministry. She is represented by the Andrea Meislin Gallery in New York City. -----------------------------------------
