Born in 1933, Davidson is one of the most influential photographers of the twentieth century. He attended Rochester Institute of Technology and Yale University, after which Davidson was drafted in the army and stationed near Paris, where he first met Henri Cartier-Bresson. After his service ended in 1957, Davidson photographed for Life Magazine for a year. The following year in 1958, he became a full time member of the esteemed agency Magnum. For the next decade, he produced several powerful bodies of work, including Brooklyn Gang, which focused on urban youth culture in the 1950s, Time of Change, which documented the Civil Rights movement in the United States, and East 100th Street, for which he which captured the people and families of East Harlem in the 1960s. In 1980, Davidson started a color series of urban life on the New York subway.

His work has been featured in solo exhibitions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art (both New York), Tate Modern (London), and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art (Washington, DC). He has work in permanent collections at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), and the Art Institute of Chicago (IL).

Davidson has received numerous awards during his illustrious career, including a Guggenheim fellowship in 1962, a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1967, and a Gold Medal Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Arts Club in 2007.

Davidson is represented by the Catherine Edelman Gallery in Chicago.
