After his service ended in 1957, Davidson photographed for Life Magazine for a year. The following year in 1958, he became a full time member of the esteemed agency Magnum. For the next decade, he produced several powerful bodies of work, including Brooklyn Gang, which focused on urban youth culture in the 1950s, Time of Change, which documented the Civil Rights movement in the United States, and East 100th Street, for which he which captured the people and families of East Harlem in the 1960s. In 1980, Davidson started a color series of urban life on the New York subway.

His work has been featured in solo exhibitions around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art and Whitney Museum of American Art (both New York), Tate Modern (London), and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art (Washington, DC). He has work in permanent collections at the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France), the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), and the Art Institute of Chicago (IL).
