Kate Winslet, LA, 2009/2013
Born in New York in 1941, Larry Fink has over forty-five years of experience as a professional photographer. He is best known for his series Social Graces, a collection of photographs that show the contrast between wealthy Manhattanites and working-class Pennsylvanians. Fink is also known for Runway, a behind the scenes look into the world of fashion, and The Forbidden Pictures, a satirical response to the state of American politics. In Kate Winslet, LA, Fink captures the actress in a fleeting moment at an Oscar party. Nevertheless, Fink carefully composed the image as if the actress is in a framed picture within the photograph. The overall emphasis is as much on shape and form as it is on the young Oscar winner. Fink’s work has been featured in solo exhibitions across the world, including the Museum of Modern Art (New York), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (CA), and the Musée de l’Élysée (Lausanne, Switzerland). His work is also held in notable institutional collections, such as the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA), Smithsonian Institution (Washington DC), and the Foto Forum (Frankfurt, Germany). Fink has been the recipient of numerous awards in his career including two Guggenheim Fellowships and two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships. In addition, he was awarded an honorary doctorate from College for Creative Studies, College of Art and Design (Detroit, MI). Fink has also published several books, including Social Graces, Boxing, Fish and Wine, Runway, and The Forbidden Pictures. Fink is represented by Marvelli Gallery in New York City. -----------------------------------------
