Six Regional Photographers Discuss the Role of Photobooks

November 1 @ 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Beyond the Artist Print: The Photobook as a Complete Artwork WHEN: Sunday, November 1, 3:00 PM WHERE: The Danforth Art Museum, 14 Vernon Street on Framingham Centre Common MEDIA COVERAGE OF THIS EVENT IS ENCOURAGED Text Chris Lyons at 617-899-4263 for press passes Some of the most intriguing photography books are published by artists.  Photographer Neal Rantoul has self-published numerous photobooks and found they fuel his creative life. These photography books or catalogues are intended as a cohesive artistic expression. The sequence and placement of images, their relationship to each other and text, and the scale and materiality are of utmost importance. His photobooks are an art form in itself which shares a narrative and meaning. Join us for an expansive conversation about the role of the photobook with photographers Neal Rantoul, Mercedes Jelinek, Frances Jakubek, Michael Hintlian, Henry Horenstein, and Richard Renaldi. The artists will discuss the importance of tangible photobooks in an era where everyone stores hundreds of images on computer drives or their smartphone. Their discussion will share how photobooks facilitate a deeper connection to the work, a clearer sense of the photographer’s intent, and a lasting source of inspiration that we can return to time and time again. This panel discussion is planned in connection with the museum’s fall exhibition, Neal Rantoul: A Life in Photographs.
