Artist Statement
Naturalized
My work engages with the overlooked nature that thrives in our urban environment and reexamines the stories we tell ourselves about these plants. Through a combination of academic inquiry and intuitive experimentation, I am creating an abstract and incomplete archive that embraces complexity.Working with cyanotypes of weeds that grow near my home, I highlight the presence of plants that often go unnoticed or are dismissed as undesirable. By researching the names and origins of these plants, I trace their colonial histories, migrations, and ecological impacts. Using laser cutting techniques and re-photography, I play with the lines between image and object, documentation and abstraction. This layered construction reflects the cyanotype process itself, and mirrors how meaning accumulates in language through layers of repetition, history, and context.
