Leopold Godowsky, Jr. Color Photography Awards
November 13, 2009 – January 24, 2010
The Leopold Godowsky, Jr. Color Photography Awards honor the co-inventor of Kodachrome film. Established in 1987, the international awards recognize excellence in the field of contemporary color photography and are gathered via nominations from a prestigious, international group of curators, critics, editors, and educators.

The winners of the 2009 Leopold Godowsky, Jr. Color Photography Awards were Claudia Angelmaier (Germany), Alejandro Chaskielberg (Argentina), Curtis Mann (IL, USA), and Nicholas Kahn and Richard Selesnick (NY and MA, USA).   Honorable Mention (online only): Seung Woo Back (South Korea and UK).

The 2009 cycle jurors included Hannah Frieser, Director of Light Work in Syracuse, NY; William Ewing, Director, Musée de l'Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland; Leslie K. Brown, former PRC Curator; and Jennifer Uhrhane, Godowsky Curatorial Fellow. deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum

"Out of the Box": Photography Portfolios from the Permanent Collection
October 24, 2009 - October 2010
The deCordova invited former PRC curator Leslie K. Brown to organize an exhibition from the museum's extensive photography collection. Selections from over ten portfolios were featured, ranging from the very first photographs to enter the deCordova's collection to the most recently acquired, including the entire PRC Portfolio. This exhibition also initiated a new curatorial program: inviting guest curators and artists to explore deCordova's collection and bring to it new viewpoints. Crisis & Opportunity:
Documenting the Global Recession

Produced by SocialDocumentary.net, this show features the work of four photographers who are the winners of a call for entries on the global recession that SDN announced in September 2009. The exhibit was first exhibited at powerHouse Arena in Brooklyn, NY, February 16-March 14.

First place winner is Tomasz Tomaszewski from Poland for his exhibit “Hades?”, an exploration of workers in Upper Silesia, Poland who are loosing their jobs and ways of life as a result of the global recession and economic restructuring.

The three honorable mentions are: Shiho Fukada's exhibit on a laborers town in Japan that has become a welfare town; Michael McElroy's exhibit focuses on the problem of affordable healthcare in the U.S. and loss of dignity; and Khaled Hasan's exhibit on about a stone workers community on the Indo-Bangla border.
