Patti Smith photograph

A true renaissance woman, Patti Smith is a singer-songwriter, poet, and artist. Born in 1946 in Chicago, IL, she began taking photographs in 1967 for use in collages and later turned to the Polaroid camera. A retrospective exhibition of her photography and drawing was shown at the Foundation Cartier in Paris in 2008. In recognition of her success in the fields of music, literature, and art, Smith was named a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French Cultural Ministry in 2005 and in 2008 she received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from Rowan University. In 1998, Michael Stipe of REM published a collection of photographs Two Times Intro: On the Road with Patti Smith. This work was exhibited along with Smith's drawings at the PRC that year. Smith was the subject of Steven Sebring's 2008 documentary Patti Smith: Dream of Life. She lives in New York, NY. www.pattismith.net
