Born in Helsinki, Finland in 1945, Arno Rafael Minkkinen studied English literature before going on to earn his MFA in 1974 at Rhode Island School of Design with Harry Callahan and Aaron Siskind. His six monographs include Frostbite (1978), Waterline (1994), Body Land (1999), SAGA: The Journey of Arno Rafael Minkkinen, 35 Years of Photographs (2005), Homework: The Finnish Photographs and Swimming in the Air (both 2008). With exhibitions and publications worldwide, Minkkinen's SAGA retrospective premiered at the DeCordova Museum and Sculpture Park in 2005, then moved on to venues in Romania, Slovakia, Finland, Italy, and Canada. His gallery representation includes Robert Klein Gallery in Boston, Barry Friedman, Ltd. and Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York, Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta, Agathe Gaillard in Paris, Galerie Anhava in Helsinki, and SEE + Art Space in Beijing. Recently elected to the National Board of the Society of Photographic Education, Minkkinen is Professor of Art at the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. The second editor of the PRC's journal Views, he delivered the PRC's inaugural Polaroid Spotlight Lecture in 2008. Never manipulated, Minkkinen's nude self-portraits blend the body with the landscape in unexpected and entrancing ways and are collected internationally.
