Born in 1939 in Los Angeles, CA, Ralph Gibson began photographing while serving in the U.S. navy and later attended the San Francisco Art Institute. A past assistant to Robert Frank and Dorthea Lange, Gibson is known for his masterful handling of composition and light. The recipient of numerous fellowships and grants, including a Guggenheim and NEA Fellowship, Gibson received the Lucie Award in 2007 and is a Commandeur de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres of France. Shown and collected internationally, Gibson had solo shows most recently at The Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin and the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson, AZ. In addition, Gibson also founded the very successful Lustrum Press, which not only published his seminal works such as The Somnambulist (1970) and Days at Sea (1975), but also publishes the work of other acclaimed photographers including Larry Clark and Robert Frank.
