Born in Boston, MA, Jim Dow earned his BFA and MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1965 and 1968 respectively. The recipient of three NEA Fellowships, he also received a Guggenheim in 1975. Dow teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Tufts University. A past assistant and printer for Walker Evans, Dow is known for his approach to the vernacular landscapes. Whether it is a baseball park, a private social club, or recent work in Argentina and Mexico, he photographs what he calls “environmental folk art” with the exacting detail of an 8x10 camera. His recent book, Marking the Land, published by the Center for American Places (2007), brings together his images of North Dakota made over a 20-year period. An active workshop and seminar leader for the PRC, Dow has volunteered to document every PRC exhibition since it became a gallery in 1985.  His work is found in many museums, private, and corporate collections. He is represented by Janet Borden, Inc. in New York and Rose Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. He lives in Belmont, MA.
