OCTOBER'S FEATURED ARTIST || Sonia Targontsidis

Born in Brockton, MA, Sonia Targontsidis (Jamaica Plain, MA) received her MFA in photography from Massachusetts College of Art (Boston, MA) in 2002 and also holds a BS in Biology from Stonehill College (North Easton, MA). Her work has been featured in curated and juried shows at venues such as Artspace (New Haven, CT), Center for Photography at Woodstock (Woodstock, NY), Copley Society of Art (Boston, MA), and recently Silvereye Center of Photography (Pittsburgh, PA). Targontsidis works at MassArt and is teaching part-time at Stonehill College this fall.

Visitors might remember Targontsidis 's color work from her thesis show in the 2003 PRC Members' Exhibition , juried by PRC Founder Chris Enos. In this brand new black and white work, Targontsidis has continued to work with her mother and father as models, but has broadened her purview to include elements of the domestic both inside and outside—quiet interiors, modest backyard gardens, various household pets, and other friends and family. In her elegantly composed and lit images, she lends a keen eye to the poetry found in heightened, everyday moments.

CURRENT PROJECTS

I've always been a looker. When I was a kid, I used to hide in my house and “spy” on my parents, neighbors, even the family pet. I loved watching people when they were doing absolutely nothing at all. I felt I could really look at them and study the subtle details of their expressions and gestures. Now, years later, when I'm photographing, I look for the same things I did when I was a kid - mundane moments, pregnant with possibilities.
