NORTHEAST EXPOSURE ONLINE ARCHIVE - CELEBRATING SIX YEARS

JANUARY 2009 FEATURED ARTIST || Heyward Hart

Heyward Hart (Somerville, MA) earned his BA in Anthropology and Studio Art from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2005. Currently working for Framers' Workshop in Brookline, MA, Hart also works part time as a printer at the Atelier at Palm Press, Inc. Hart's past exhibitions include showings at The Basement Gallery in Knoxville, TN; artSPACE@16 in Malden, MA; and the Public Library of Brookline, MA.

Featured online are selections from a new series inspired by drawing. Acknowledging black and white photography's unique power to accentuate linear qualities, Hart focuses his lens on a wide variety of everyday subjects and settings. Ranging from residue of leaves on the hood of a truck to chalk drawings between dying vines on the side of a house, Hart mines the world for tracings and constructions, bringing a new understanding to early photography's idea of “photogenic drawing.”

Artist Statement
"Tracings"

"The picture must be . . . a revelation, an unexpected and unprecedented resolution of an eternally familiar need. "
- Mark Rothko

Mark-making is my primary intent. I study each photograph for traces of drawings I have lived, marks I have experienced. In this sense, the photograph is an index—it points me towards something. This indefinable something is not arbitrary. A grass bed, tree shadow, surgical incision each hold, within the simplicity of their structures, unexpected patterns. Form is the internal logic which connects my photographs to one another. These connections are wordless resolutions of a familiar need.
