Tony Decaneas started Panopticon in 1970 as a custom lab and opened the gallery a year later. He sold the gallery to Jason Landry in 2010 (a former PRC staff member) and it is one of the oldest photography galleries in the country. Decaneas now oversees the Decaneas Archive, which focuses on humanistic documentary photography. He has worked on books and portfolios for Ernest Withers, Bradford Washburn (also a past PRC Print Program artist), and Vittorio Sella.
Decaneas's personal projects include "Ten Days in Eastern Europe - 1990" and "Portraits of America from a Moving Train." In 1987, Decaneas published Pavlia, Portrait of A Greek Village, a collection of photographs taken in his father's village.
Decaneas has sat on many collecting panels for the PRC and donated works to our auctions. This print is a part of "Photographs on Mount Athos, Greece" and shows a historical monastery situated within picturesque hills.
