The works of 51 nominated artists from North America were juried for the 1988 Leopold Godowsky, Jr. Color Photography Awards. The jurors were Martha Langford, then Chief Curator for the Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography, and now, independent curator and Artistic Director, Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal 2005; and Anne Wilkes Tucker, then and now, the Gus and Lyndall Wortham Curator at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
The 1988 Award winners were:
Bruce Charlesworth (Minneapolis, MN)
Trained as a painter, Charlesworthalso works as an actor, designer and photographer. In the 1970s, he began designing and photographing film noir sets for his own fictional characters. These unsettling creations, dubbed “self-photographs,” are comedic narratives set in domestic situations.
Rafael Goldchain (Canada)
Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, Goldchain represents a foreign observer’s view of the “political realities” of Mexico and Central America. In his images, he reveals the expectations of Latin America, while incorporating his own memories of a similar homeland.
Patrick Nagatani and Andrée Tracey (Albuquerque, NM and Los Angeles, CA)
The collaborative work of Nagatani and Tracey involves elaborate props, painted scenes, photographs, and actors (usually including the artists themselves). The nuclear age, stereotypes, and class structure are themes repeatedly addressed in their art.
Alex Webb (New York, NY)
Webb’s color images have consistently distinguished him from mainstream reportage. His fascination with what he has termed “hot light” has increasingly drawn him further south in search of subject matter. For the 1988 Godowsky award, Webb was recognized for outstanding achievement in the use of Kodachrome film.
