Group Portrait
November 18, 2005 – January 22, 2006
This exhibition spotlighted emerging and mid-career photographers who engaged and challenged the genre of narrative and group portraiture. Curated by PRC Curator Leslie K. Brown, Group Portrait featured artists Julie Blackmon, Ben Gest, Jessica Todd Harper, Amy Montali, and Sage Sohier. Many referenced painting, theater, and composite photography in arrangement, lighting, large scale, and method. Within their groupings, these artists, all of whom use their own family and friends, investigated ideas of the self and the group as well as the dynamics of relationships and situations, simultaneously real, created, or somewhere in-between. DOCUMENT: Contemporary Social Documentary Work from Greater Boston February 2 – March 26, 2006
This exhibition showcased recent social documentary work from Boston and on Boston through the eyes of nine emerging and early mid-career photographers. Curated by PRC Curator Leslie K. Brown, DOCUMENT highlighted a new generation of regional documentary photographers by considering a variety of projects as well as approaches to social documentary and the "document." Perhaps most importantly, the show also considered what we can do after the picture is taken. Photographers featured were Mariliana Arvelo and James Patten, Claire Beckett, Suzi Camarata, Chris Churchill, Lisa Kessler, Surendra Lawoti, Michael Manning, and Amber Davis Tourlentes. DOCUMENT was held in conjunction with the Boston University Art Gallery's exhibition A Photographic Portrait of Boston, 1840-1865 ( through April 2, 2006).  This exhibition featured early, historic photographs taken by Boston photographers of Boston and Bostonians from four major Boston archives.  For the special online component to this show, please click here.
