About the Workshop

How can photography help us reimagine the places we know?

In this hands-on workshop, participants will explore photography as a material for creative experimentation through collage, layering, mixed media, and found imagery. Using personal photographs, archival materials, text, and ephemera, you’ll create original works that reflect on Boston’s history, neighborhoods, architecture, identity, and imagined future.

Through demonstrations, discussion, and guided studio time, participants will develop new approaches to storytelling while expanding their photographic practice beyond the traditional print.

You’ll Explore

  • Contemporary collage and mixed-media practices
  • Combining photography with drawing, painting, and found materials
  • Visual symbolism and narrative building
  • Working with archival and found imagery
  • Hand-cut and digital collage techniques

Workshop Includes

  • Artist presentation and discussion
  • Guided hands-on collage exercises
  • Individual experimentation and creative exploration
  • Group critique and reflection

What to Bring

Please bring any materials you’d like to incorporate into your work, such as:

  • Personal photographs
  • Magazines and newspapers
  • Vintage ephemera

  • Paper and sketchbooks
  • Pens, markers, colored pencils, watercolor, or other favorite art supplies

About Dana Smith

Dana Smith is an editorial illustrator and photographer based in Boston, MA. His art and images appear in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Washington Post. He also works with many universities including Harvard, Brown, Colgate, Penn State, and USC. His work has been showcased in American Photography and Communication Arts. In addition to his vast editorial background, he has the daily grind of 10 years of newspaper photojournalism experience behind him. He was affiliated with the legendary Black Star agency for 15 years. Smith was an instructor at the New England School of Photography for 20 years and now teaches in the MassArt Pre-Semester program as well as various other workshops.

This hands-on event, created and led by our Spring interns Neave Bunting, Cassandra Crockett, and Catherine Teo, with support from the Executive Director, is an opportunity to experiment with cyanotype, learn new techniques, and connect with fellow artists.


Bring a print to exchange and leave with a piece from another participant, along with your own newly created work. Whether you’re new to cyanotype or looking to expand your practice, this is a welcoming space to make, share, and build community.

The lecture will take place in the Screening Room at Lesley University Hall. Following the talk, we invite you to continue the conversation during a social hour at the PRC gallery from 7–8 PM, where Amani will be signing copies of his new book Invisible Sun, which will be available for purchase.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Amani Willett is a Boston-based photographer whose work explores family, history, memory, and the social environment, often through the book form. His monographs Disquiet (Damiani, 2013), The Disappearance of Joseph Plummer (Overlapse, 2017), and A Parallel Road (Overlapse, 2020) were named among Photo-Eye’s “Best Books of the Year” and have been widely published and exhibited. His work appears in major collections including MoMA, Tate Modern, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Willett is an Associate Professor of Photography at Massachusetts College of Art and Design.

Invisible Sun, published by Dust Collective, is a visual meditation on survival, transformation, and memory, exploring how childhood trauma and lived experience continue to shape the present.

Announcing the Next PRC Speaker Series Event!

Join us on Thursday, February 5th at 6 PM for a talk by Rachelle Mozman Solano, held both online and in person at the Screening Room on the lower level of Lesley University Hall.

Rachelle Mozman Solano is an artist working between Brooklyn and Panamá, drawing from the histories, myths, and psychological inheritances of the Americas. Her work—deeply informed by her practice in psychoanalysis—explores identity, migration, family narratives, and the intersections of story and mythology within everyday life. Mozman Solano is the recipient of a 2024 Guggenheim Fellowship and has exhibited at institutions including Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, El Museo del Barrio, the National Portrait Gallery, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, and others.
