Flickr
(Founded 2004, Vancouver, Canada; Now Based in Sunnyvale, CA)
Nominated by PRC

Flickr was developed in February 2004 by Vancouver-based Ludicorp husband and wife team Stewart Butterfield and Caterina Fake. Originally intended for one of the company's online games, the application was quickly found to be better for picture sharing and, perhaps more importantly, more fun! In March 2005, Yahoo! Inc. acquired Flickr.

Key to its popularity is its use of "tags," allowing users to generate metadata from which to sort and group photos according to any topic or subject, groups, and its price tag: free. Akin to the open-source encyclopedia, Wikipedia, Flickr's community and database is entirely user-driven. With the proliferation of digital cameras as well as other imaging devices such as camera phones, Flickr now boasts over 3.5 million users and over 100 million photos are posted on the site with more added every day.
